Introduction to Arena of Iron

Arena of Iron is a casino slot from Bullshark Games, where futuristic mechanised warriors show off their fighting skills to entertain their masters. However, unlike the gladiators from Ancient Rome, we don't think they will ever win their freedom, even if they vanquish all their opponents. While the oil drips from the damaged parts and scraps of metal fly through the battleground, you can admire the carnage from a distance and benefit from its effects on the 5x4 grid. There, the combined powers of Wild symbols and multipliers can deliver wins up to 12,000x the bet. If you make it to the final stages of the robotic tournament, you'll be able to benefit from Wilds becoming sticky and multipliers on them turning persistent for the duration of the bonus.

If you don't feel like getting too close to the fighting, you can take the risk-free approach in the demo mode available at the top of the page.

Theme, Gameplay & Payouts

Arena of Iron is a video slot from Bullshark Games with 5 reels, 4 rows, and 20 paylines. You can choose your stake from a range of options, starting from a Min.bet of 0.1, which makes the game particularly affordable, up to a Max.bet of 100. The math profile offers a default RTP of 96.33%, which is in line with the industry standards, although one alternative variant of 94.28% is also released, so make sure you check the version you're playing. Wins should appear slightly more valuable but less frequent on average due to medium-high volatility, while the max win available to score is 12,000x the bet. The base hit frequency sits at the rate of 31.9%.

The main scene in Arena of Iron places you in the middle of a futuristic Colosseum, with force fields surrounding the centre and a robotic warrior waiting for his next opponent. Surprisingly, the stands around the battlefield are empty. That, however, may not indicate the lack of interest around the event, but is more likely an emphasis on the technological domination of society, where people stream everything from the comfort of their homes. And so, the mechanised gladiators must battle it out in solitude, with no cheers coming from the audience, but to the tune of an ominous techno soundtrack. You can also use any device you like to watch the show, as the game's responsive design makes it available across all desktops, smartphones, and tablets.

The paytable hierarchy is divided into two sections. To score a win, you must match at least 3 identical icons on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost one, while covering any of the 20 active paylines. Among the low-paying symbols, you'll recognise royal playing card ranks, such as 10, J, Q, K, and A, all awarding from 1x to 1.5x the bet for a combination running through all 5 reels. A button, a pendant, a trophy, a sword, and a helmet represent the high-paying icons, delivering payouts of between 2.5x and 10x the bet for a 5-of-a-kind hit. Alongside regular icons, there are also Wilds represented by a robot gladiator, Scatters in the form of a scroll, and Multiplier Adders appearing as robotic orbs.

The Deathmatch Bonus

Multiplier Adder

Multiplier Adders can land on all reels. Once they settle, they activate a beam that goes in one, two, or all four directions. It originates from the symbol and travels toward the edge of the grid. All positions it touches receive a multiplier of x2, x3, x4, x6, x8, x10, x15, x20, x25, x50, x75, or x100. Whenever the beams overlap in the same position, the multiplier values in it are added together. All winning combinations crossing through positions with multipliers benefit from the boost to their payout equal to the sum of all multipliers they use.

Robot Rumble Bonus

Landing 3 Scatters anywhere on the grid within the same spin activates the Robot Rumble Bonus with 10 free spins. Throughout the round, the Multiplier Adders behave identically as in the base game, and all Wilds become sticky after landing. Any multipliers they receive are progressive and do not reset between spins. Each Scatter scored awards +1 extra free spin.

The Deathmatch Bonus

With 4 Scatters hitting the grid at the same time, you trigger The Deathmatch Bonus with 12 free spins. This round includes all the previous mechanics and upgrades, plus awards at least 1 Wild symbol on the initial spin. Each Scatter scored awards +1 extra free spin.

3x = Bonushunt Featurespins, with a 5-times higher chance to trigger a bonus game.

50x = Quick Charge Featurespins, guaranteeing at least 2 Wilds and 1 Multiplier Adder to land.

100x = Robot Rumble Bonus with 10 free spins.

250x = The Deathmatch Bonus with 12 free spins.

Final Thoughts on Arena of Iron

Like many studios on Hacksaw's Open RGS platform, and their host before them, Bullshark Games continues to explore seemingly endless methods of delivering multipliers. We've already seen some decent attempts at that approach in Gearlab Genius and Behind Bars Masterplan, and now it's time for some futuristic gladiator rumble to take reigns. Arena of Iron comes with quite an intriguing theme that's been dressed in clean, high-quality graphics, although one that could dive a little deeper into the narrative and develop a stronger connection to the mechanics. Still, it manages to create an appropriate atmosphere with an intense, heroic soundtrack and dark, technological aesthetics that give the scene a dystopian vibe. There's just enough detail in the entire package to make everything look consistent, but if you appreciate a more expanded storyline, there's not much else to explore here.

The gameplay loop is pretty straightforward as well. Wilds and multipliers take centre stage, helping to create and enhance payouts from standard payline wins. With values up to x100 on Multiplier Adders, hitting a few of them at the same time and having their beams overlap in several positions can be quite satisfying. We expected all those multipliers to become persistent during free spins, which has not been entirely the case. The win potential is focused primarily on sticky Wilds there, which carry over their values to successive spins. This approach may prove cleaner to some players, focusing on the most valuable element of the game, instead of spreading the multipliers around the entire grid. To each their own, but if you prefer a bit more centralised configuration during the bonus round, this one could do the trick.

Arena of Iron keeps things simple, using a potent combination of position multipliers and Wilds served in a clean fusion of gladiator fights and robotic future.
