Final Thoughts on Unboxing Oblivion
If it wasn’t apparent in the introduction, we think that Unboxing Oblivion is a very surprising release, and a pretty interesting one at that, especially coming out of Peter & Sons, who many may even associate the studio with releases like the Barbarossa series, Dig It, or Book of Books. But we will also very quickly state that this can be a very divisive release because of its theme, as we can see many players not really be interested or even cringe at either the streamer or VTuber theme, as it can be quite niche, and many other studios would probably take the streamer theme and blow it out of proportion for comedic value. Because of that, we think the extra layer of inspiration from the story of Pandora’s Box, the occult vibes, and our personal favorite, the chat feed, which aims to mimic a real live-stream chat, really helps make Unboxing Oblivion more than just a simple niche theme.
However, while we have a lot of things to say about Unboxing Oblivion’s theme and presentation, its gameplay is sadly not as intricate. But it doesn’t need to be, as Peter & Sons delivers on a rather true and tested formula all about Expanding Wilds with Multipliers, which is arguably one of the industry’s favorite Symbols because of its potential. While they can occasionally make up a solid win in the base game, the game doesn’t fully shine until you enter the Free Spins feature, where Multiplier Reels and Wilds work together to both help form and boost paylines, and while the paytable isn’t the best, it can definitely reach great heights thanks to this combination. This is especially true for the Super Free Spins, but do note that it is locked behind the Feature Buy, which can be controversial. So while the studio isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, as we’ve seen similar gameplay loops before, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a solid formula with a lot of potential for both wins and fun spins.
