Introduction to Spaza Shop

Spaza Shop is a casino slot from NowNow Gaming that embraces South African culture with a cartoony depiction of a small, neighbourhood business. Spaza shops are micro convenience stores operating straight from people's homes or garages, selling all kinds of everyday household essentials. The game captures the homey vibe of such an establishment, with a cheerful fellow offering various goods from the reels on his stand set up in the middle of a run-down district. Way wins combined with cascades fuel the action, supported by Street Boost symbols transforming into Wilds and a win multiplier that increases with each consecutive drop. During Free Spins, one reel is guaranteed to contain the enhanced symbols to potentially generate more Wilds and allow you to hit more combinations. If you're lucky, you can even find a max win of 10,000x the bet among all the items offered on the shelves.

Theme, Gameplay & Payouts

Spaza Shop is a video slot from NowNow Gaming with 5 reels, 4 rows, and 1,024 ways to win. You can choose your active stake from a range of options, starting from a Min.bet of 0.10 up to a Max.bet of 100. The game offers a default RTP of 96.31%, which is in line with industry standards, promising reliable long-term returns. The mathematical profile comes with high volatility, which distributes more payout value toward big wins at the expense of their reduced average frequency. The top prize is capped at 10,000x the bet, while the average rate of base hit frequency is 24.55%.

Spaza Shop drops you in the middle of a South African neighbourhood, which highlights the stereotypical image of such a place. It's a rather run-down piece of town that doesn't aspire to much, showcasing the lack of organisation and funds to create better living conditions. But people get by, and one of those residents is a resourceful chap in a yellow safety vest, operating his scarce grocery stall. Despite the rather depressing and dirty environment, the game maintains a cheerful vibe with its cartoony graphics, trying to focus on the positive side of the bountiful shelves of the little shop. If you have a need for some of these essentials, you can drop in on any modern device, whether you play on a PC, a smartphone, or a tablet.

The paytable comprises two sets of regular symbols, which award payouts whenever you manage to land between 3 and 5 matching instances on adjacent reels, starting from the left one. Among the low-paying icons, you'll see coloured playing card ranks from 10 to A, awarding from 0.5x to 1x the bet for a set of 5 on a winning way. High-paying symbols consist of images depicting a bag of candy, a matchbox, a loaf of bread, energy drinks, and a bag of chips, which bring payouts ranging from 1.2x to 5x the bet for a 5-of-a-kind combination. Wilds are represented by the shop's owner who substitutes for all regular symbols and pays 10x the bet for independent combinations of 5. FS Scatters appear as a cash register.

Cascading

Every time you hit a winning combination, a cascade is triggered, where the evaluated symbols disappear from the grid, making room for new ones to drop in. This can potentially lead to further hits, and the process continues as long as new combinations are being formed.

Street Boost

All regular symbols can appear in two variants: standard and Street Boost. The latter appear only on the three middle reels and are marked with a golden frame. Whenever a Street Boost symbol participates in a win, it doesn't disappear, but transforms into a Wild and drops along with other remaining symbols.

Multiplier Meter

On each spin, the Multiplier Meter above the reels displays random multiplier values of x1-x10, x15, x20, x25, x50, or x100. The meter starts at x1 at the beginning of each spin, and each successive cascade adds the next value in the queue to the active multiplier.

Money Move Bonus

Scoring 3, 4, or 5 FS Scatters anywhere in view at the end of a main game spin awards 10, 12, or 14 Free Spins. During the round, one of the three middle reels is selected to only display Street Boost symbols on each spin. Hitting 3 FS Scatters simultaneously awards 10 additional spins, plus 2 more for each additional FS Scatter in the same sequence.

Feature Buy

The game offers several options for triggering enhanced spins or purchasing instant access to the bonus round.

3x = Bonushunt Featurespins with a 5-times higher chance to trigger the bonus round.

50x = Street Boost Featurespins, guaranteeing a full reel of Street Boost symbols.

100x = Money Move Bonus with 10, 12, or 14 Free Spins.

Final Thoughts on Spaza Shop

Spaza Shop has clearly been designed with a South African audience in mind, so it's probably a little unfair to evaluate it on a global scale, unless the game will also be released in other markets. However, even if it's an exclusively local title, the game doesn't showcase much quality. Not that NowNow Gaming has shown exquisite audiovisual proficiency too many times before, but this one feels particularly half-baked. Whether the creators felt like that's all the South African player needs or wanted a quick, undemanding release to meet the busy schedule is anyone's guess. The result, however, is an average-looking setting, whose only redeeming quality is the strong cultural tie to the specific geographic region.

The gameplay is far from riveting as well. The main feature, Street Boost, which transforms special versions of regular symbols into Wilds after a win, feels poorly balanced. In fact, within our first 100+ spins, we managed to trigger it only once in the base game. The Multiplier Meter proved much more helpful more frequently. Seeing how the bonus rounds don't apply any persistence to the multiplier and only guarantee a random reel filled with Stree Boost symbols, we were sceptical about its capabilities. Multiple tries confirmed that you must be extremely lucky to hit several high-value multipliers within a single cascading sequence to get anywhere remotely close to the max win of 10,000x the bet. Such a combination of mechanics made the entire experience extremely dull and unrewarding.

Spaza Shop is a poorly designed slot all around, seemingly created with the sole purpose of attracting an inexperienced South African player.
