Jeff & Scully are your typical conspiracy theorists and are paired up with one of the most innovative, confusing products we’ve seen in a while. Just understanding how you made a winning combination required us to open up the paytable and read, which we rarely have to do. It’s usually quite straightforward with lines or ways, but ELK is having none of that here. This crazy scene required equally crazy mechanics, and we’re here for it. Except for the colorful symbols, the scene is quite dim, which creates a nice contrast. But hey, these two fellas are completely zoned out and focused on their theories, so they probably don’t really care about what’s going on around them.

The lower-paying symbols include chemtrails, cows, aliens, and pyramids. Four-of-a-kind with these pay 0.05x-0.2x the bet, but that increases rapidly when the connection is bigger. The higher-paying symbols consist of JFK, Astronauts, Jeff, and Scully. Four-of-a-kind with these pays 0.75x-1x the bet. Holy moly, that’s all we have to say. This one certainly required some extra strong coffee. Not because it was boring; the opposite. It’s a slot game where ELK’s extremely high level of innovation really shows, and it requires quite some focus to really grasp. To some, that might sound like a bit much, as most of you probably don’t want to get a PhD to understand a slot machine, but it’s not as bad as we might be making it out to be. 

Sure, if you just enter the game and start spinning, it’s probably going to take a while until you get a hang of it, but hey, now you’ve read our review so you’ll be an immediate expert. It’s really just about understanding the area win, and you’ll be just fine. 

Thematically, we are pleased. It’s not the most eye-pleasing slot, but it’s undoubtedly something we haven’t seen before in terms of background story, making us intrigued. Both the title and the scene remind us of Beavis and Butthead, another game that we rate highly because of its theme. Many providers just create a game and slam on a generic skin, so a game like Jeff & Scully stands out immediately. 

Although we’re impressed with the brains behind the Area Win mechanic, it remains to be seen whether it’s a hit or not. Our worry is that it makes the game quite hard to follow. The grid is large and the symbols drop quickly, so most often, you won’t see that you’re about to make a connection until you do, which does remove some suspense. 

Jeff & Scully by ELK provides very innovative gameplay and an interesting theme.
