Introduction to Guitar Quest

Guitar Quest is a casino slot from Relax Gaming that lets you live out your rockstar dreams. Guitar Quest mixes heavy metal sound and rock culture with the gameplay of the Guitar Hero video games into a slot form in all the best ways. It’s not like the first time we’ve had a music-themed slot release, but those usually come from Play’n GO in the form of branded releases, as seen with SabatonAnnihilator, and House of Doom 2: The Crypt. While we think these games are rocking, they don’t bring out the real rockstar in us, and Guitar Quest does that through its 3 core features, those being the random Equalizer bonuses, coming with additional Wilds, Multipliers, Splits, and Upgrades, and the Backstage and Solo Mode Bonus Games, with the latter being the unique star of the show.

At first glance, this might look like a rather standard slot experience on a 5x4 playing grid and vandalized fruit symbols, but these amps go up to eleven whenever you trigger any of the highly volatile features, which can help you on your hunt for the max win of 10,000X the bet. This is a game that Oscar “Ogge” Persson, the former CasinoDaddy streamer, has been involved in creating. Since this is his second game, following his debut slot Necromancer's Gate, we reached out to him for a Guitar Quest interview to get the scoop.

Grab your pick, start shredding, and let the wins fall in as you headbang your way through Equalizer Bonuses and Guitar Hero-like bonus games. If you want to try the game for yourself, then be sure to check out the Guitar Quest demo.

Theme, Gameplay & Payouts

Guitar Quest is a video slot from Relax Gaming with 5 Reels, 4 Rows, and up to 1,024 ways to win. You can choose between making a Min.bet of 0.1 and a Max.bet of 100. Guitar Quest comes with an average RTP of 96.10% and high volatility, where wins can feel explosive, and each bonus game trigger can be the time you hit the max win of 10,000X the bet.

When you start the game, you are welcomed to a small animation of someone waking up and getting ready to rock and roll. This disembodied arm is then your companion for the game, waving and rocking along as you spin away. Next to the playing grid, you’ll then also find an amplifier, a guitar, and some cheeky graffiti saying “Ogge Was Here”. You can play the game on most notepads, mobiles, and desktops.

The lower-paying symbols are J, Q, K, and A. Creating a win with 5 of the same symbols will pay out 1X the bet. The higher-paying symbols are plums, watermelons, cherries, bells, and 7s. Landing a win with 5 of the same symbols pays out 2.5X to 5X the bet. In the base game, there are two Special Symbols, those being the Wild and Scatter Symbols, however, you’ll find even more Special Symbols in the Solo Mode bonus game, but more on that in the next section.

Wild Symbols

Wilds help create winning combinations by being able to substitute for all symbols except Scatter Symbols.

Equalizer Bonuses

At the beginning of each spin, there is a chance to trigger 1-4 Equalizer Bonuses, and any combination of features can occur in the base game. The bonuses are as follows:

Wild Jam = Randomly adds 1-8 Wild Symbols to the reels.

Twin Riff Split = Randomly marks 6-10 positions on the reels before any symbols land. Symbols that land in these positions are duplicated and count as two symbols in each position.

Fire Up Multiplier = At the end of the spin, a Multiplier ranging from 2X to 10X will be added to the total win.

Symbol Upgrade = Removes the four lowest-paying symbols from being able to land on the reels for the spin.

Backstage Bonus Game

Can be chosen from the Bonus Pick’em after landing 3 or more Scatter Symbols. During the Backstage feature, you can upgrade the Electric Guitar Meter by landing 5 Scatter Symbols. Each completed level will award you with a new persistent Equalizer feature and +5 spins. The activated Equalizer bonuses will trigger on each spin in the same order, and if all features are unlocked, filling the meter will again award +5 spins.

By triggering the feature with 3, 4, or 5 Scatter Symbols, you will start the bonus game with 8 spins and the Wild Jam feature activated, 10 spins with the Wild Jam bonus active, or 10 spins and the Wild Jam and Twin Riff Split bonuses active. If you land 3 Scatter Symbols on the same spin during the feature, you will be awarded +3 spins.

Solo Mode Bonus Game

Can be chosen from the Bonus Pick’em after landing 3 or more Scatter Symbols. The Solo Mode bonus game is played on a special playing grid, where Battery, Coin, Guitar God Booster, and Expander Symbols move downwards, and you can hit these symbols with the randomly-moving Collector Bar at the bottom of the grid. The Special Symbols are as follows:

Coin Symbols = Coins vary in value and size, each carrying a Multiplier of the bet amount, ranging from Small (1X-5X), Medium (10X-75X), Large (100X-500X), and Epic (1,000X).

Battery Symbols = Batteries come in three different sizes and are what keep the bonus game going and fill the Energy Meter when collected.

Guitar God Booster Symbols = Unleashes a temporary power-up, and while active, high-value coins appear more frequently.

Expander Symbols = Expands the Collector Bar to cover all reels for a limited time.

The feature ends when the Energy Meter reaches 0.

The Solo Mode bonus game is played a bit differently, having notes fall down into the collector to be turned into cash rewards

Ante Bet

There are two types of Ante Bets that you can turn on to increase the chance of triggering various features and bonuses, but at the cost of increasing your current bet.

1.5X = Activates the Enhanced Spins, making each spin have double the chance of triggering a Bonus Game.

10X = Activates the Bonus Reels, greatly increasing the chance of triggering a Bonus Game by removing all other normal paying symbols.

Feature Buy

Through the Feature Buy options, you can instantly trigger various features and bonus games for a prize based on the current bet.

10X = Triggers the +1 Equalizer Spin, making the next spin guarantee 1 random Equalizer bonus, with a chance to trigger more.

50X = Triggers the +2 Equalizer Spin, making the next spin guarantee 2 random Equalizer bonuses, with a chance to trigger more.

100X = Triggers the Bonus Pick with 3 Scatter Symbols, with chances to land additional Scatter Symbols.

400X = Triggers the Ultra Bonus Pick with 5 Scatter Symbols.

600X = Triggers Full Volume, activating all 4 Equalizer bonuses for a single spin.

Final Thoughts on Guitar Quest

To us, Guitar Quest felt like a love letter to heavy metal and rock music, and these aspects shine through in the passionate development of just about every part of the game. While definitely not the most important part in any slot game, we do want to first mention that the music in this game just hits right, and it really helps sell home the heavy metal theming. On top of this, the visuals are great, and even the disembodied hand, while reminding us of Thing from The Addams Family, looks real enough. But, as we mentioned earlier, at first glance, the game may just look like a shiny traditional slot game, especially with the many fruit symbols and rather basic playing grid, but that’s where the features come in and turn everything up to eleven.

For being a game with only 3 real core features, the game doesn’t really feel imbalanced, or as if you’re always spinning just to chase the next bonus game. However, as the one to carry the base game, the Equalizer isn’t an end-all, be-all feature that will flood each spin with bonuses that are there to help an otherwise fine paytable, but we can’t deny that the feature is inherently volatile.

These bonuses are also in the Backstage bonus game, which turns them persistent between spins and leans more into the standard Free Spins formula. However, for those who want to spice it up a bit or want a bit of nostalgia, there is the Guitar Hero-like Solo Mode bonus game. While some may say this bonus game is a bit niche, we thoroughly enjoyed its uniqueness and preferred it because it felt like a breath of fresh air for its gameplay with some nostalgia tacked on, while at the same time holding its own as a gateway to big wins. These two bonus games feel balanced in their gameplay, albeit highly volatile in different ways, but they serve a better purpose, and that is to give players the option for a more traditional bonus game or to try something unique, with both of them still being able to serve the same purpose, and that is to hunt down the max win of 10,000X the bet.

Guitar Quest is a slot that perfectly encapsulates a heavy metal theme, with a strong foundation of 3 core features that deliver highly volatile, exciting gameplay.
