Introduction to Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks

Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks is a casino slot from Playtech that takes us into the kitchen to learn how to best cook pork chops. This game is part of Quickspin’s long-running Big Bad Wolf series, which started in 2023, and has seen plenty of releases ever since, such as Big Bad Wolf: Pigs of Steel and Big Bad Wolf Megaways. Even though it has been a decade since Playtech acquired Quickspin, it seems that they finally wanna throw their hat into the ring and see what they can do with this beloved fairy tale. Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks puts us right in the kitchen of the titular wolf with a gameplay loop consisting of Collector Wilds and Cash Prizes, alongside Win Multipliers, Special Prizes, and two types of Bonus Games. While the game may show faint traces of its predecessors, Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks plays a bit differently, and with its new theme, makes this release feel quite fresh out of the oven. So, if you’re interested in learning how to cook up wins and handymen pigs, the Big Bad Wolf has the recipe for you and a max win of 5,000X the bet.

Playtech delivers on its own Big Bad Wolf release with a handful of new features and a new gameplay loop.

Wild Symbols

Wild Symbols help form winning combinations by being able to substitute for all symbols except Cash Prize, Scatter, 1 Up, and X Symbols. Wilds can only land on reel 3, row 2, also known as the Hot Zone.

Cash Prize Symbols

Cash Prize Symbols come in one of 4 colors with a random Cash Value, which can only be paid out by a Wild Symbol landing in the Hot Zone on the same spin. Landing a Cash Prize will also increase the value of its color corresponding Special Prize, with the red, green, and blue Cash Prizes increasing their Special Prize with 0.1X, and Gold Cash Prize Symbols increasing their Special Prize value by 0.25X the bet.

Win Multiplier

The Win Multiplier sits in the top-right corner of the game, starting at 1X and can be increased by landing the 1 Up Symbol, up to a maximum of 10X. However, the Win Multiplier stays locked and can only be activated by the X Symbol in the base game. When an X Symbol lands, it will multiply all Cash Prizes in view by the current Win Multiplier.

High Steak Respins

By landing a Scatter Symbol at the same time as a Wild Symbol, you will be awarded the High Steak Respins with a 3-spin counter. The Wild Symbol remains locked in the Hot Zone, and only Cash Prize and 1 Up Symbols can land during the bonus game, with any of them being able to reset the spin counter back to 3. Each Cash Prize Symbol that lands will be multiplied by the current Win Multiplier, and filling all positions before you run out of spins will award you the grand prize of 5,000X the bet.

Golden Cauldron

The Golden Cauldron feature can be triggered on any spin during the base game when landing a Cash Prize Symbol or at the end of the High Steaks Respins feature. The bonus game allows you to pick hidden plates until you’ve revealed 3 matching Pig Symbols to win one of the four Special Prizes, and they are as follows.

Blue Special Prize = Starting value of 7.5X and can increase up to 50X.

Green Special Prize = Starting value of 20X and can increase up to 100X.

Red Special Prize = Starting value of 100X and can increase up to 250X.

Gold Special Prize = Starting value of 200X and can increase up to 500X.

When one of the Special Prizes is won, its value is reset to the initial value.

Final Thoughts on Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks

The story of the Three Little Pigs is, for some reason, very popular in the industry and is arguably the most popular fairy-tale theme for slots, as seen with games like Light & Wonder’s Huff N’ Puff series, or Pragmatic Play’s releases like Greedy Wolf and Brick House Bonanza. However, the Big Bad Wolf series predates most of these releases, and for good reason, as its games are beloved by many, and while they come relatively infrequently, that only helps them feel fresh. Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks is a great example of this, as it brings a fun twist with its kitchen setting. While we did wish its features were maybe a bit more thematic, that’s something we can let slide. Visually, the game delivers on the familiar art style the series has used for years, but it looks good enough not to feel outdated at release.

When it comes to gameplay, Playtech decided to change up the core mechanics a bit, as we no longer have the typical Tumbling Reels present in many previous releases. Instead, we have a game that leans a bit more into Cash Prizes and Special Prizes, and this gameplay loop works relatively well, especially in the titular High Steaks Respins, where we no longer need X Symbols for the Multipliers to be active. However, it might have leaned a bit too much into it, as the regular paying symbol paytable feels pretty bad, meaning we’re bound to these Prizes for sizable wins. Speaking of, the Special Prizes, while not being an original mechanic, are a fun gimmick to play around with, and can lead to some pretty exciting moments during the Golden Cauldron feature, but it isn’t perfect, as some Special Prizes can take quite some time to stack up. All in all, Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks is a good addition to the Big Bad Wolf series, feeling like a solid slot experience for both new players and veterans, but it isn’t anything that is gonna blow your mind.

Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks is a slot game part of Quickspin’s Big Bad Wolf series, but this time released by Playtech, which takes the beloved fairy tale and puts it right into a kitchen filled with Prizes and Bonus Games.
